Nigerian comedian and actor, Okechukwu Anthony Onyegbule, widely known as Okey Bakassi, has shared his perspective on marriage, describing
as a better fit for African societies.
Speaking on “The Honest Bunch” podcast on Monday, Bakassi argued that monogamy, often celebrated as the ideal marital structure, is failing in Africa. He suggested that polygamy aligns better with the realities of African life and relationships.
“Forget all the lip service that we play to polygamy here,” he said. “Me, I still think that polygamy is the best form of marriage for Africa. Why? Yes. Monogamy is not working. We are pretending.”

Bakassi further explained the key difference between the two forms of marriage.
“Polygamy says you can marry two people at the same time. Monogamy says you cannot marry them at the same time. You have to let one go,” he remarked, adding, “What if you don’t want to let that one go?”
also stated that any woman who wishes to marry more than one husband should be allowed to do so.
He added, “If a woman is successful and wants three men, should she? Yes… society should allow it.”
The comedian’s comments have sparked fresh discussions about marriage and relationships in Africa, where cultural and modern views often collide.
Many listeners of the podcast have since taken to social media to share their thoughts on Bakassi’s controversial stance.
